Ozone Theory

North American research scientist were the first (in 1974) to give voice to the fear, on the basis of model calculations, that Chlorofluorocarbons were capable of attacking the “ozone layer” in the Stratosphere (other substances which destroy the “ozone layer”, such as the Halons, were identified later). The Ozone present in the Stratosphere act as a filter for the dangerous components of sunlight (UV-B radiation). Damage to the “ozone layer” means that we must asume that there will be a Climatic Changes, an increase in the number of cases of skin Cancer, and damage to plants and animals, etc. Control measurements have since confirmed the theory: the “ozone layer” has reduced by an average of 2 % in only 17 years. Major damage to the “ozone layer”, amounting to 50 % and more, is observed from time to time in the Antarctic (the so-called hole in the “ozone layer”).
