Refuelling Losses

Considerable quantities of gaseous Hydrocarbons find their way into the environment during the storage and transport of fuels for petrol engines:

  • through storage and loading and unloading at refineries and tank storage sites and during deliveries to filling stations,
  • during the refuelling of Motor Vehicles,
  • through evaporations and tank breathing in vehicles,
  • through the exhaust.

Refuelling losses can be considerably reduced by the use of gas return systems (gas displacement process) at filling stations and by the use of activated charcoal filters (so-called carbon traps) in vehicles.
