A designation used for nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. The oxides of nitrogen occur in paricular as unwanted by-products in combustion processes at high temparature (above all in Motor Vehicles engines and Power Stations) and in the chemical industry (manufacture of Fertilizers). The oxides of nitrogen attack the mucous membranes of the respiratory organs and encourage the oneset of respiratory diseases. The oxides of nitrogen also damage plants. The presence of oxides of nitrogen in the Atmosphere contributes to the formation of Ozone and other Photo-oxidants and also to the formation of Photochemical Smog (Los Angeles Smog). |
