Decomposition

Chemical compounds are broken down by physical or chemical (abiotic decomposition) and/or biological (biotic composition) processes into simply structured components. The individual compounds decompose at very different rates in different environmental media (air, water, soil). The rate of decomposition is expressed in terms of the Half-life. The expression Persistence is used when the rate of decomposition is low.
