Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

A plastic produced by the polymerization of vinyl chloride. Environmental problems arise in conjunction both with the manufacture (e.g. from the Emission of vinyl chloride or the Special Waste in the course of vinyl chloride production), with the processing (e.g. from the use of Heavy Metals and chemicals), with the use (e.g. from escaping gaseous plasticizers), and with Waste Incineration, since large quantities of hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid) can occur unless this is prevented by means of appropriate separation equipment. Under unfavourable operating conditions PVC can lead to the formation of Dioxines and furanes in Waste Incineration plants. Special problems also arise from fires involving large quantities of PVC, since this can cause severve caustic burning of the individuals concerned and major corrosion damage to buildings. Special protective measures must be implemented, and careful cleaning must be carried out.
